The [[Indiana University]] Sample gates serve as an entrance into the oldest part of the current Bloomington campus, known as the [[Old Crescent]]. The gates were constructed in [[1987]] with funding provided by [[Edson Sample]]. Among the most widely photographed structures on campus, they are constructed of Indiana [[Limestone]] and are typically surrounded by tulips in the Spring. Many campus and community organizations use the Sample Gates as a starting point for public protests.

Before the gates were built, [[Kirkwood Avenue]] ran into campus and connected up with the access road that runs between the [[Student Building]], [[Maxwell Hall]] and the [[IMU]].
