Robert Gates earned his Masters degree in Russian history from Indiana University in 1966. While attending IU, the Central Intelligence Agency reportedly recruited him. His wife, Rebecca Wilkie Gates, and daughter, Eleanor M. Gates, are both alumnae of IU as well.

Gates is the successor of Donald Rumsfeld at the post of Secretary of Defense in the George W. Bush Administration.
