The Sassafras Audubon Society is a local chapter of the national bird-watching society. Dedicated to informing and educating outdoor lovers of all ages, the Society sponsors almost weekly birding outings as well as occasional slide shows or programs at the library. In addition, the Society participates in bird counting drives and other wildlife research projects, as well as fundraising for natural area preservation and wildlife advocacy. Most recently the group has been working to purchase and sustain the Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife area.
