Bloomingpedia:About

From Bloomingpedia

With new technology, capabilities and capacity, comes a new level of informative detail.

Bloomingpedia is a City Wiki about the city of Bloomington, Indiana and the surrounding area. It allows any authorized user to make changes and additions to the articles. While allowing anyone to change articles might seem like a bad idea, the majority of people using the wiki care about the quality of its content. A popular example of wiki technology is Wikipedia, which is an extensive online encyclopedia maintained by people around the world. However, where Wikipedia is about global concepts, Bloomingpedia covers only information related to Bloomington.

Similar to Open Source Software (such as Linux), Bloomingpedia is created by the people and for the people. It is an example of how great something can be when we all work together on it. Bloomingpedia is not limited to any specific set of information such as historical, news, profiles, data sheets or surveys. It is all these things. It is an all encompassing plethora of information for a city in the 21st century.

Bloomingpedia started out of the desire to organize and find more information about Bloomington and its rich history and culture. After not being able to find better information about Bloomington on the Internet, Mark Krenz decided to create a wiki in order to allow everyone to collaborate on an information resource for Bloomington. Within the first few days of its existence, people started coming to the site and editing articles. It was then decided that the Bloomingpedia Council would be formed to help guide the direction of the site and to ensure that it would be a useful resource and will last for years, if not decades to come.

Bloomingpedia was started in July, 2005 by Mark Krenz. It is managed by the Bloomingpedia Council.
