Canopy of Lights

From Bloomingpedia
Looking up Walnut Street

The Canopy of Lights refers to the strings of lights linking the Monroe County Courthouse with the buildings on The Square in downtown Bloomington. There is an annual event, on the Friday after Thanksgiving to turn on the lights. Live music and singers entertain the crowd before the lights are lit for the season.

History

Appearently, the Canopy of Lights tradition was practiced in the mid 20th century in Bloomington and then was revived into the current tradition in 1985 at request of Robert Sullivan to then director of the downtown commision Tom Gallagher.

The lights that are on the trees are left up year round.
