Donald J. Burns taught martial arts classes at Indiana University from 1970 until his retirement in 2006. A United States Air Force veteran, he began learning and teaching judo in 1961, and also served as a physical conditioning specialist, a combative measures instructor, and a massage therapist. He began teaching for the school of HPER in 1967, and wrote a textbook on judo.

Don is married to Janiece Jaffe. They have two children.
