J.C. Penney is a large retail chain of stores that had stores in Bloomington locations. From approximately the 1930's through the 1970's, J.C. Penney had a large department store on the west side of The Square, at 115 N. College Ave. When urban blight became an issue in Bloomington's Downtown, the company moved to College Mall. That store was demolished in early 2003 and currently Target is located in the space that J.C. Penney occupied.
