Rick Greenspan was hired as the Indiana University athletic director in September 2004. The third athletic director in four years, Greenspan has been successful in a variety of ways, including the hiring of new men's and women's basketball coaches, new football, volleyball, and soccer coaches, and setting records in alumni donation dollars. Under his leadership, the university has launched a new $55 million renovation of the athletics facilities and finished each of the last two years as one of the top 40 athletic programs in the nation.

Greenspan is under contract until June 30, 2013. He earns $300,000 annually, as well as deferred compensation of $60,000 a year, and potentially an additional $50,000 in bonuses for various athletic and academic goals. In addition, Greenspan receives up to 10 weeks of additional pay if the president deems him to have achieved "significant accomplishments".
