William Bell (1902-1971) was the premier tuba player and teacher in America during the first half of the Twentieth Century, succeeded by his student Harvey Phillips. He toured with the Sousa band in 1921-24, was principal tubist under Fritz Reiner at the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and founded the Cities Service Band of America. "Bill" Bell continued inspiring new generations of musicians with his appointment as the first professor of tuba at Indiana University in 1961.
