Shoes over the high wires

From Bloomingpedia
At the intersection of Elm Street and 7th Street

While making your way around Bloomington, you may have looked up and noticed shoes tied together and hung over telephone and power lines. This is a common tradition for graduates of Indiana University. It is a way for graduates to "leave their mark" or mark their territory, simular to how shoes are hung over wires in ghettos of large cities. You'll find these hanging shoes all over Bloomington, especially on less traveled streets.

Shoe Tree

There is a tree full of shoes behind Swain West next to the service driveway. It is most likely the shoes from members of the fraternity there.
